Parker is that good. Ipswich is even better, comparatively.
Ipswich, even on their worst day ever, will still score less than 20 points.
Parker, with transfer in Vollmer...we'll they're unstoppable, and that's saying alot since I think Dupree is pretty good.
A's: Burns, Witt and Herman all in the Top 10, one more guy @ 30th or so (Shane Herman?)....and they win it.
Girls A...Spearfish (where is Gehner?) should win, but Garretson will be close.
AA: Lincoln and Roosevelt are really good- I think people will see that this weekend. Brookings, Pierre and Stevens will scuffle for the podium. Stevens, imo, will be 3rd. Pierre 4th.
Girls: RC Central should win. Stevens will be interesting to watch with no gorman; Brandon Valley is better than people think. Ab Central will probably get the last podium spot

Custer? I like it. Very scary and under the radar. Could pop up and shock some people. I don't think they will but I will be pulling for them. This was supposed to be their year. Feel bad for Herman. Not how you want your senior season to play out.

Madison ran their race yesterday and to that I give them my respect for it, they deserve the title of Champions.
with that said I'm looking forward to next year already, going to be a turn around for CEB.

yesterday was a blast.
Madison boys ran as expected. Madison top two girls really ran well. CEB will be there next year with everyone returning.
Washington girls were a big surprise running great. Congrats to them.
Congrats to Spearfish for the combined award. Their guys getting third was a great surprise for them. Congrats.

I am a Madison Alum. My son does run but was not at the state meet.
Two things. I did want Madison to win and they did. I was pulling for Austin Berens to do well, and he did.
You have to understand a few things, I have not lived in Madison for years. If Milbank was a contending team, I would have pulled for them over Madison. As I do in every other athletic contest. When Madison is up against any other school, I want them to win.
But what I said about Custer was spot on. I don't like to see injuries to be a factor in who wins and who doesn't. I am a fan of running. Period. I said in the Class A preview, on paper, Custer was the best team and it wasn't close. With a healthy Herman, different outcome.
Real quick: Could there be a worse setup for a state CC meet than Huron? It is awful.

I actually like the Huron course. It is challenging and the course drains well (there was little hint that Huron got nearly an inch of rain two days before). If you go to the back of the course there are several places to watch the runners without too much work. Unfortunately, the class A races were too congested with spectators. Move regions qualifying from 20 to 15 runners. But it definitely beats the RC public golf course and is better than the crowded Yankton Trails.
Too bad for Madison and Yanktons elite girls, if they had a little bit of help, they would have team hardware. The Madison boys 1-4 had a great race. They are enjoying their win. Even though Madison looses 4 of their top 6, they will still have a strong 4 scorers next year. The cupboard is not bare.

CoonDawg: Well, if you want to see the finish it is bad. Start the race where they have the current finish line and finish where they have the start. Easy fix. To have a finish chute where fans are only allowed on one side is ridiculous. The loops do work well for viewing and I have no problem running to 4 or 5 points within the loops and not miss much of the race. However, most people found it difficult. Look, if the SDHSAA is going to charge for admission they have to make it better. This is a continuing problem.
Yankton Trails at least feels like an event. Huron needs to do better. It is NOT just another CC meet.

I don't think I've heard of wanting fewer spectators at a cross country meet. I like Huron's course as courses go. I'm not a big fan of the Yankton Trails European style course and I don't like all the switch backs of Rapid Cities course (or running on cement with spikes). However, Sioux Falls hosts a better meet. There is more fanfare and the feeling that something big is going to happen. I guess there are tradeoffs in everything.
As for the meet, I enjoyed watching all the races, but I came to watch the AA. As I posted previously, the girls race came down to the 5 I mentioned. I was rather surprised by how big a margin Woods won by. She ran away from the field and hid. With about 500 meters to go, it looked like Propst, Kearney, Kruse, and Kastigar in that order. Kearney passes Propst, Kruse passes Propst and Kearney. Kastigar passes Propst and Kearney. What a race for second.
In the boys race, DeHaven ran away with it. I thought that Schroeder might try and hang with him, but it appeared that Schroeder was hanging back and playing for second. Diggs has matured into a very good runner as has Brant Gilbertson. The race for 3rd-6th was a good race.
Team wise...no one was close to RC Central as was predicted. They just have too many very good runners. Their normal 1 or 2 runner actually was 21st in the race but were still able to pack 3 in the top 10. At Huron earlier in the season, I thought Stevens would still be good enough without Gorman to give RC Central a run. An unfortunate injury changed that. Washington had a very good state meet, but if you look closely at the GDC meet, throw out Gorman and Washington beats Stevens at the GDC. I think they flew a bit under the radar. If you look at the top 8 teams and their top 5 runners, there are still only 3 graduating seniors...and Aberdeen Central has two of them. 2013 could be just as close as 2012 was.
On the boys side, there wasn't any real surprises. Lincoln ran fantastic and claimed their first title since 1984. Roosevelt continues it's strong tradition on the boys side with their runner-up finish. They will not be going away any time soon. Brookings has Addison, but it was a 9th grader finishing 48th and not outside the top 50 that gave the Bobcats 3rd place. Stevens runs much better with Burdick. He picks up the team and I thought they had a nice effort to place 4th. Pierre has had better efforts this year, State just wasn't their day.

Yes, that spectator finish set up is something else. A dozen media get one side, a thousand people share the other. That has to be fixed. But I'll wish we were back there come Oct. 26, 2013 when I'm in Rapid City where the route literally closes on runners because it is so packed with spectators and doubles back in such small spaces.

I didn't have a problem with the course, per se, except for that congested finish. The bigger problem, in my opinion, is having the state cc meet during the pheasant opener in a smallish city world-renowned for its pheasant hunting. Rooms are hard to come by for those traveling a long distance to watch.
