Just saw the results of the Footlocker Midwest Regional Meet.
Smoragiewicz was 5th (15:15) and Addison Dehaven probably shocked most of the meet, running for 9th place (15:20). Tony and Addison will both make the trip to San Diego for the national meet.
Hopefully Tony can make it through the next two National Meets. The triathlon schedule (worlds in September) and right into cross country has to be pretty tough on anyone physically and mentally.
Just making the Footlocker national meet as a Soph is a tremendous accomplishment for DeHaven, so anything he does there is icing on the cake.

I am concerned by the 5th place finish by Smorg. Did he just run to qualify or did he have a tough race?

I wouldnt be very worried by Smorgs place. He was within 5 seconds of 2nd place. He beat Leingang (2nd place) at Nike Heartland so i'm sure Tony will be able to do it again. I have a feeling he took it easy.

That is what I was hoping. With NXN (Oregon) next week followed by FL (SoCal) on the 11th with significant travel he was likely just qualifying. Great to see Dehaven make it. Amazing that we have two national elite runners. Also, the MW region has been dominant in recent years. Tough to get in.

I have a feeling he took it easy. I'd like to think that he took it easy to qualify, but I just don't think that's the case. When you look back, he hasn't had much of a break from Elite level athletic competition since the state xc meet 2010. There has to be a tremendous amount of residual "stress"- physical and mental- from so many elite level competitions. Tony seems like a great kid and spends more hours per week training (w/ swim-bike-run) than anyone else, but he's also still a kid- not an endurance robot. No one can keep that schedule for that long without seeing some sort of performance stagnation or even decline. The World Tri's are a big deal- and I think the build-up was and the competition was very, very taxing. Verzbikas could not follow it and he's a sub 4:00 min guy; national 2-mile record holder (8:25 or something crazy like that). I hope he can hold it together for two more races and then take a well-deserved break from training and competing. On the other side of the Footlocker race- how about Addison DeHaven!!?? Incredible performance for just a sophomore- I think he is one of the only Soph's that made the finals in San Diego. It will be very exciting to see how he does at the National meet- anything he runs will be icing on the cake to an unreal accomplishment. He's a gamer who probably was on no one's radar after 16th (?) @ Nike heartland. He is an exciting runner.

I talked to somebody that has talked to Tony about his race at footlocker and he indeed took it "easy" in order to stay as fresh as possible for Nike Nationals.

Good, I hope that is the case, then. Anything in the Top 10 made it to the Championships, so hopefully your friend is right!

Haha, they definitely have some energy! The guy on the right (Alex Lohr) just graduated from SDSU, so that's the SD-Flotrack connection!

Solid performance. Looked like Tony got caught up in the large chase group and was unable to outkick. No one was catching Futsum Zeneselaisse. It will be a tremendous race this weekend between Futsum and Cheserek. This race will be streamed live on my 55" LED.
I don't give Tony much of a shot at winning, but a top 5 finish will be spectacular. Seems like the depth is greater than last year. I just hope he whoops Leingang. Long season for Tony S.

Lots of press on the South Dakota guys (tony/addison) @ Footlocker; Addison got a front page link on letsrun.com. www.letsrun.com/forum/flat_read.php?thread=4353772I think tomorrow's race is going to be awesome up front with Cheserek and Futsam, too, Norm. Addison posted his latest workouts on letsrun (check out a link within the link above) and he is fit- and has a good aerobic base (I think he's had 10 weeks of ~70 miles per week). I could see him cracking Top 20- it's hard to say though. Great to see Tony and Addison both make it- a HUGE day for South Dakota running and these two guys. footlockercc.com will stream it live!!!! My guess is that we have two South Dakota guys in the Top 25.

Smoragiewicz finishes 7th and DeHaven 32nd. Bismark's Leingang was 4th. The midwest was second as a team. Nice job guys.
